@mia.warner.signpainter on Instagram too
Finding some female sign painters.
Looking at a variety of artists to help me determine the breadth that sign painting covers. This enables me to explore a variety of ideas for outcomes for the issue I find. The more I research the more I notice that it is not that hard to find sign painters especially once you find one. They are all linked and in contact with one and other.
The purpose of find a young female sign painter is to determine how common that Is in 2024 to see a young female in the industry. In the past the most common person to be seen doing sign painting would be a male, so as time as gone on there has become a bit more of a 'type of person' which is an older male who has most likely had sign painting be passed onto them through family.

#5yrsago The stupendous hand-painted signs of Carter's travelling Steam Fair
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Better Letters tumblr has posted a massive gallery of the hand-lettered signs from Carter's Steam Fair, a touring vintage fair that stopped last weekend in Clissold Park in Stoke-Newington, London. Carter's is a family business, and it's a magnificent affair, even down to the gleaming, streamlined family trailers parked around the perimeter. Joby Carter, the fair's signpainter, is the son of the founder, John Carter, and he is part of a five-generation tradition of handpainted signs. My wife and I took our daughter and a friend to the fair yesterday and were amazed, thrilled and delighted by every single detail, from Voltini's Electrocution sideshow to the penny arcade where we gambled recklessly with enormous, Georgian pennies to the many rides and funhouses (and don't forget the steampunk QR code!). As my daughter's six-year-old friend said while we left, "This was the best day of my life!"
I took some pictures, but Better Letters had the run of the place at a pre-opening tour and is in any event a much better photographer than I'll ever be, so  look at those pics, too.
After taking these photos I had a chat with Joby Carter, son of the fair’s late founder John Carter. Aged just two when the fair first opened in 1977, he has since become an expert on fairgrounds, their history and the accompanying lettering traditions. For the last seven years he has been sharing some of this experience through his signwriting and fairground art workshops at Carters’ winter base in Maidenhead.
Joby’s own learning came through a combination of family tradition and training under a master signwriter. Joby’s father, John Carter, trained at Slade School of Art, and his mother was also an art college graduate. Joby started out by assisting them with some of the pictorial work around the fair, most of which is still done by his mother, Anna Carter. He was then deemed good enough to start doing pieces by himself and undertook further training in lettering from the fair’s resident signwriter, Stan Wilkinson. Stan is now retired and signwriting at the fair is entirely Joby’s responsibility. His skills were recently celebrated in this piece for the BBC, titled ‘21st Century Victorian‘.

The wealth of knowledge amongst our staff is second to none.
About us Family Business Radiant Blinds and Awnings is a family business and has been manufacturing blinds and awnings for around 50 years. However we have over 100 year’s connection in the trade as you can read about in our history page. We have a loyal workforce, many of our employees have been in the trade for 30+ years providing a wealth of experience and understanding of the trade in general. New employees benefit from the training provided by our longstanding, experienced members of staff.
Our Exterior Products Nowadays we help design, manufacture and install awnings to homes, shops, restaurants, cafes, offices and many other commercial establishments.
Traditional Victorian Awnings Although as a company we’ve introduced new ideas, products and manufacturing techniques, we still pride ourselves in retaining many of the old values and methods. For example, our Traditional Victorian Awnings are still manufactured using some of the older style components and methods. Naturally, we’ve progressed with the times but have retained the traditional design from the late 1890s. These awnings are still a popular choice with customers. They are durable and stylish suiting many of the older style properties.  However even on modern shopfronts, they provide a touch of class.'
Folding Arm Awnings New blinds and awnings are constantly coming on to the market. There are some very sophisticated folding arm designs which incorporate lighting.  You can also have heaters fitted on some models.  Remote control operation is also getting more popular and some clients choose to have sun/wind sensors.  However if you prefer a simple awning controlled by a winding handle, we can advise on the different types and help you select a plain or patterned fabric. These folding arm awnings can be for your home or business. Whatever type of property you have, we’ll help you choose the model and finishes best suited to your needs.
Dutch and Fixed Framed Awnings and Canopies At Radiant Blinds and Awnings, we have been manufacturing Dutch Blinds and Canopies for many years.  Made from high quality aluminium covered in a fabric of your choice, these are still great products at a reasonable price.  We also manufacture Fixed Frame Awnings, triangular and curved. Again, these are reasonably priced yet still provide shading and advertising.
Giant Umbrellas and Cafe Barriers Not only do we supply blinds and awnings but also Giant Umbrellas, Alfresco Screens/Cafe Barriers and we can incorporate branding if required.
Renovation and Recovering Service Another ‘string to our bow’ is our renovation and recovering service.  You may already have a blind or awning but it just needs some updating.  Perhaps you’ve taken over a shop and want to change the colour scheme and signwriting. We can do this in our factory. It’s a cost effective way of rebranding or updating your awning without incurring the expense of a new one. All of our blinds and awnings are bespoke.  Therefore we can help you select the design, fabrics, colours and signwriting.  We have experienced representatives who will work with you from your initial enquiry to completion of your order.
Our Interior Products As well as all the exterior products, we have a range of interior blinds.  These include electric blinds for roof lanterns and skylights, woodslatted venetians, plantation shutters, metal venetians, verticals, rollers, electric roller blinds, pleated, roman, velux, conservatory blinds and window film. Again, we provide a measuring, advice and installation service for these products. We have a wide selection of fabrics and finishes which our representation will be pleased to show you.
Welcome to Radiant Blinds South West Radiant Blinds (South West) Limited produces the same products and level of service as our Surrey branch.  Radiant Blinds (South West) was formed to specifically cover the West Country, South Wales to Land’s End.  We are also approved and monitored by check a trade. History of Radiant Blinds A little bit about the History of Radiant Blinds
John Dean John Dean was the founder of a blind and awning manufacturing business based in Putney in 1894. He was the son of a Devon policemen who travelled to London looking for employment.  John worked and lived in a furniture store where he slept at night on the shop counter and educated himself at the local library.  Eventually John took over his brother’s blind and awning business in London and ran this successfully throughout his life.  Over the years, the company expanded, and he opened branches in Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Bristol.'
Fulham Football Club John Dean became chairman at Fulham Football Club and was dedicated to the club as well as the business.  He employed footballers to paint blinds and awnings during the summer months which supplemented their income and some of the players worked for him after their footballing careers had finished.  When space was tight in the factory, blinds and awnings were stored under the stands at Fulham.
Charles Bradlaugh Dean & Tony Dean John died in 1942 and was succeeded by his son Charles Bradlaugh.  This was during the second world war and blackout blinds were in high demand as well as new blinds for shops which had been bomb damaged.  Charles ran the business until his death in 1958 and was succeeded by his sons Charles and Tony.  Charles ran the Manchester division named Irving Blinds and Tony ran the London based company.  During the 1950s and 1960s the business thrived. People had money but little to spend it on.  Tony employed over 120 people and had contracts with most of the big retail stores.
The Dean, Atkinson & Emerson Years Although Tony sold the business in 1968, it did not mean he would leave the blind and awning trade.  He already had another smaller blind and awning manufacturing company, Radiant Blinds (using Tony’s initials Richard Anthony Dean).  He had set this up to run alongside Deans and provide a double hit on sales opportunities.  Once Deans was sold, he ran the venetian blind business for five years and then started selling exterior blinds and awnings again.  Radiant Blinds grew and became an established , well-respected, independent company.  Tony’s daughter Nicola joined in 1983 and worked closely with her father.  In 1988 Nicola and her husband Roger started running the business and were later joined by Roger’s brother Ian until January 2015 when the Emerson family took over.  Therefore Radiant Blinds and Awnings continues to be a family concern.
